Our name reflects the ancient association between the Vikings and Suffolk (which for some years was part of Danelaw). It was at Felixstowe in 885 AD that King Alfreds fleet attacked sixteen Viking ships at the mouth of the Stour, which in those days was approximately where Felixstowe Pier is now, and captured them all.
